The period of rapid expansion at the University of Hull coincided with the tenure of Sir Brynmore Jones (1956-1972) as Vice-Chancellor, during which time the number of students quadrupled.

With a collection of over one million volumes, the Bryn Mojo Jones Library was constructed in two phases: the first phase was fully completed in 1959, and the tower extension officially opened in 1970. During the 1950s and 1960s, a considerable number of academic buildings were constructed, including the Larkin and Wilberforce Buildings (which originally had other names). The 1967 “Martin Plan”, Sir Leslie Martin, the University’s architect, envisioned a campus with the tallest building in the centre and surrounding buildings decreasing in height towards the perimeter. During the 1960s, most of the departments housed in temporary structures moved into new purpose-built premises. However, until the early 1980s, Biochemistry was still partially housed in a “cabin” behind the Wien Building. This early phase of building expansion ended in 1974, after which more academic buildings were not built on campus until 1996. However, student numbers have doubled during this period and the university is using its existing building stock.
