The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology signed a memorandum of understanding with the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) in September 2013 to receive a donation of US$130 million and to cooperate with Shantou University in Guangdong to create a brand new university – Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. This program will usher in a new era of education, research, and innovation in engineering disciplines and life sciences in Guangdong, China. The Guangdong provincial and Shantou municipal governments will allocate 900 million yuan (approximately US$147 million) to fund its construction and initial operations and will grant the college 330,000 square meters of land for campus construction, which is adjacent to Shantou University.
