WGU was formally established in the United States in 1997 by the governors of 19 states in the United States. In 2010, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels opened the first state branch, WGU Indiana, and the school reached 20,000 students for the first time. In 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provided $4.5 million for the creation of WGU Indiana and WGU Texas and WGU Washington.
