La Verne University was founded in 1891 as Lordsburg College by members of the Fraternity of German Christian sects from the Schwarzenau Brotherhood. Historically, the Fraternity was considered one of the “churches of peace”, just like the Quakers and Mennonites, and board seats were still reserved for members of the Fraternity. Graduation ceremonies are held at the local Brethren, and the holder of the campus chaplaincy must be a member of the Brethren.
Lordsburg College originally opened in a hotel building on the corner of Third and D Streets in La Verne, California (then called Lordsburg). The land-booming hotel is said to have never had a single paying guest because interest in the land surrounding Southern California had faded by the time the hotel was completed. In 1899, two members of the fraternity decided to convert the hotel building into a university, so they purchased the hotel along with 100 city lots for $15,000. The Lordsburg College Building was demolished shortly after Founders Hall was built in 1928.
In 1901, the Los Angeles Times wrote that Lordsburg College “seems doomed to an early demise.” Attendance has dwindled to just 12 students, just two more than faculty and staff, and the college has been saddled with multiple scandals involving its management. The college’s second president, EA Miller, came to California after a scandal in Virginia. The school’s fourth principal, William Hoover, resigned in 1901.
