In 1841, Sanford University was established in Marion, Alabama, formerly Howard College. Some of the land was donated by the Rev. James H. DeVotie, who served on the Sanford Board of Directors for fifteen years and served as its chairman for two years. Julia Tarrant Barron gave the first financial gift of $4,000, and she and her son also donated land to build the college. The college was established after the Alabama Baptist Conference decided to establish a school for boys in Perry County, Alabama. The first nine students of the college began studying traditional languages, literature in January 1842 and science courses. Several distinguished speakers have given commencement speeches in the early years, including those from Mobile’s Thomas G. Keen, Joseph Walters Taylor, Noah K. Davis, and Samuel Sterling Sherman. In October 1854, a fire destroyed all of the college’s properties, including the only building. When the college recovered from the fire, the Civil War began. Howard College was converted into a military hospital for the Confederate government in 1863. During this time, the remaining faculty of the Academy provided basic instruction to soldiers recovering in the hospital. For a short time after the war, Union troops occupied the college and sheltered freed slaves on campus.
The college reopened in 1865. Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry was a lawyer, former U.S. Congressman and Confederate officer who served as president from 1865-1868. He is committed to the wider cause of education and supports the expansion of normal school training.
In 1887, the Howard College Board of Trustees accepted real estate and funding from Birmingham, Alabama, and moved the institution there. Faculty members who remained in Marion established the Marion Military Institute (MMI) on the old campus. MMI continues to operate in Marion.
