In 1958, this university was originally called Columbus College, when it was the junior college of a hosiery factory. The college has 15 faculty members and nearly 300 students participated in the course in the first year.
Columbus College moved to the downtown area in 1963, and built a campus defined by modern architecture in a former dairy farm. The school awarded four-year bachelor and master degrees in 1965. The first four-year class graduated in 1970.
In 1996, the school was renamed Columbus State University as part of a four-year institutional restructuring plan within the state’s university system. The school now offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in more than 90 disciplines. As of the 2010 academic year, the university had enrolled more than 8,200 students. In early 2007, the Department of Art and Drama moved to the newly built RiverPark campus of the University in downtown Columbus. The complex aims to provide art students with a close-knit living community and larger studios, laboratories and galleries. The Schwab School of Music is located in the adjacent Performing Arts River Center.
