On February 20, 1863, Kansas Governor Thomas Carney signed an act creating a state university in Lawrence. The law is conditional on Lawrence contributing a $15,000 endowment and providing the university with a piece of land of not less than forty acres (16 hectares) in or near the town. If Lawrence fails to meet these conditions, Emporia will be awarded the college in Lawrence’s place.
The university site was a hill called Hogback Ridge (later known as Mount Oread), privately donated by Charles L. Robinson, the Republican governor of Kansas from 1861 to 1863, who was the original settler one. Lawrence, Kansas. Robinson and his wife Sarah gifted 40 acres (16 hectares) of land to Kansas in exchange for land elsewhere. Philanthropist Amos Adams Lawrence contributed $10,000 to the necessary endowment, and Lawrence citizens raised the remainder themselves through private donations. On November 2, 1863, Governor Carney announced that Lawrence was eligible for the State University, which was officially established the following year. The school board held its first meeting in March 1865, which was when KU was formed. Later that year, work on the first university building began. The school opened on September 12, 1866, with the first graduating in 1873. According to William L. Burdick, the first degree awarded at the university was the Doctor of Divinity, awarded to the famous abolitionist preacher Richard Cordley.
