The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university located in Newark, New Jersey, with a degree-granting satellite campus in Jersey City. Founded in 1881 with the support of local industrialists and inventors, especially Edward Weston, NJIT opened as the Newark Technical School in 1885 with 88 students. The school grew into a classic engineering school – the Newark School of Engineering – and then, with the addition of the School of Architecture in 1973, became a polytechnic university, which now has five colleges and one school. As of fall 2020, the university enrolled approximately 11,600 students, 2,000 of whom live on campus.
NJIT offers 52 undergraduate (Bachelor of Science/Arts) majors and 67 graduate (Masters and Ph.D.) programs. Through its Honors College, it also partners with nearby institutions, including Rutgers Medical School and Seton Hall School of Law, to offer specialized programs in healthcare and law. Cross-registration is also possible with Rutgers-Newark, which borders its campus. NJIT is classified as “R1: Doctoral University – Very High Research Activity”. It operates the Big Bear Solar Observatory, the Owens Valley Radio Astronomy Observatory (both in California) and a suite of automated observatories spanning Antarctica, South America and the United States.
