On March 6, 1909, following statehood, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill providing for the establishment and site of Northeastern State Normal School in Talquah, Oklahoma, to train teachers. In 1921, the name was changed to Northeastern State Teachers College as it expanded to include a full four-year program. In the 1950s, Northeastern became a comprehensive state university, expanding the bachelor’s degree program to cover liberal arts subjects and adding a five-year program designed to prepare teachers for master’s degrees in elementary and secondary schools.
With the addition of graduate degree programs, in 1974 the Oklahoma Legislature authorized the change of the institution’s name from Northeastern State College to Northeastern Oklahoma State University; in 1985, it authorized the change to Northeastern State University.
